#10 [ Doing for Others ]

The plan was simple. It was Wednesday, my day off and all I wanted was a Starbucks, Java Chip Frappuccino. The drive-thru Starbucks by my house was out of the drink flavor I wanted, typical, So I decided I would run into the local super market that had a Starbucks in it, grab a drink, and go enjoy the rest of my day off.

As soon as I stepped into the grocery store the plan went haywire. I found myself immensely hungry and decided to just grocery shop while I was there. As I sipped on my Starbucks and walked throughout the store I noticed a baby crying the whole entire time. It didn’t bother me as much, but it was definitely noticeable. When I got up to the register I saw the crying child and his grandmother. His grandmother was holding up the line because her grand baby was a sick child, so he could only have certain foods/drinks. Unfortunately not all those foods were covered by her food stamps so she was stuck there trying to decide which products she would have to go without.

As you could probably imagine, this was taking up A LOT of time. Surprisingly, again, I didn’t mind. Multiple cashiers asked me to go to other lines but I decided I was fine with waiting. The longer I waited the more impatient the cashier got. I found this pretty ironic as I stood there witnessing this cashier get upset with the customer because she was taking “too long”.

A little over three minutes later, I decided enough was enough. I told the lady with child, whatever she couldn’t pay for I would cover. Everyone was so taken aback that I offered. The manager offered me a sticker because of my extreme kindness. I thought how ridiculous is this. Five minutes ago you were upset with this lady now everyone has a change of heart when I decide to pay for her groceries. I smiled and laughed it off. It ended up being a pretty expensive trip to the grocery store for me but I was happy to help.

The lady with the grand baby offered to pay me back if I would just give her my phone number. I respectfully declined and told her not to worry and to just pay it forward.
